The Beacon
directory poster
The Beacon La Costa is a gathering place for the North County Coastal community of San Diego, California. It reimagines to inspire and celebrate the coastal lifestyle with thoughtfully curated shops, contemporary designers, cafes, independent merchants, daily services and best in class eateries.
As an intern at Linespace, I was given the task to create a directory poster that would help navigate customers through the retail space. Design constraints required a poster that could be easily changed and shows light through it, as it would be backlit.
While a white background would be brighter when backlit, white text on a dark background is less strain on the viewer’s eye. With The Beacon’s color palette, I used lighter colors and small shapes on a charcoal background to prevent strain on the viewer’s eyes when reading in the dark. I found that using charcoal numbers on the color coding columns are easier for the reader as they have a higher contrast to the color blocks than white. This design creates a more comfortable experience for customers and prevents navigation frustration. My poster demonstrates The Beacon’s brand while incorporating the audience’s needs.
