Barbie

repurposed toys on shoes

Inspired by Margot Robbie’s and Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie, I created a camp pair of Barbie shoes with my old Barbie childhood toys. I wanted to make a shoe for myself that would resemble playtime. I used removable fasteners to achieve this goal.
I started by sewing cut fishnets onto my shoes to create pockets for plastic accessories that couldn’t be fastened to the canvas. I then attached doll dresses and accessories with enclosed gaps above the fishnet pockets. Some of these pieces include purses with handles, a blender, a guitar amp, and a shopping cart. I also attached smaller pieces like Barbie bracelets, hair clips, and a cellphone to the shoe laces.
Safety pins was a crucial aspect for this shoe. In order to have true playtime, every piece must be removable. Using rubber cement, the shopping cart holds a cardboard box of dog food and two plastic cat food pieces after several walking user tests. All of these pieces, even if accidentally removed, can be reattached to the shoes.
Although this design would easily target kids as the consumer, I believe this could bring a level of playtime mindfulness for adults too. With my shoe concept, any consumer could enjoy switching out and mixing up their shoe appearance with removable accessories.

Converse Barbie Shoes sms ad

After editing the photos from my self-directed photoshoot, I used the image assets to create a mock Converse ad. I created my ad to mimic their SMS (text) ad branding to demonstrate my visual marketing skills. My goal is to achieve a playful, eccentric mood to draw intrigue to the SMS recipient through eye-catching movement, color change, and contrasting sketches.

ATTENTION:
This is a mock ad I created as if Converse released this product and sent a notification to their customer base via mobile advertisement.
This is not a legitimate ad, and I do not claim to have any current affiliation with their marketing department. I created this ad to display my variety of design skills as my personal design project.

handmaking

Sewing the fishnet down to the heel of the shoes was the most difficult part. I had to use needle-nose pliers to grip the sewing needle inside of the shoe to push it through the thick back. This was also the most time-consuming portion of making the shoes.
The time spent on sewing took 20 hours spread across several days and locations.

sound editing

When collecting my assets to create the Barbie shoes ad, I recorded audio of the sound my shoes make when I walk. The clinking of the tiny plastic pieces brings a personal sense to what it sounds like when walking in these shoes. To some it might be annoying. But when I hear it, child-me is carrying around Barbie accessories bins, ready to have another play day.
