But Also..

informative animation

But Also.. is an informative animation bringing awareness to abortion ban consequences. choosing this topic began with my inherent curiosities about any potential future I might have from pregnancy. Before Roe V Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court, I had concerns about how pregnancy changes the trajectory of any pregnant person’s life—whether or not by their consenting choice. When turning to research and testimonies, I found outrages delivery costs, expensive average childcare costs, and high statistics on pregnancy complications, disproportionately higher for black and brown Americans.
I considered the “Pro-Life’s” perspective and how they always stand for “saving the unborn children.” I researched what happens to those children that Pro-Lifers claim to save, which usually ends up being orphans. There are at least 400,000 unadopted children in foster care at any given time in the United States, as of 2021, with about 20% aging out of foster care every year. With this knowledge, it became clear to me what kind of life that would be “saving,” or rather, forcing to live.

I decided to shed some light on this research to clearly inform my audience about the child’s perspective, especially since the child is often expected to be grateful for life despite the pain they live through in the foster care system. Aside from the obvious confusion and abandonment, they do not live their lives with environmental stability and can develop life-interfering mental health issues. They are not given as many tools and help to live independently during or after foster care either.
Using this information that I gathered, I created this animation to inform while illustrating a realistic possible livelihood for the children who are already born and living in foster care.

I implore everyone who comes across this project to consider the drastic, statistically true testimonies people share about pregnancy. With Roe vs Wade now being overturned, health-compromised complications are not being taken seriously during pregnancy, and female people are forced to have unconsensual pregnancies, especially people of color.
